LEARN HOW TO INTERPRET THE SPREADS YOU CREATE
To interpret a spread, let's return to the basics of how to interpret an individual card. Draw a card. While looking at it in its position in a layout, notice the following:
What does the card's number mean (just starting out, experiencing conflict, about to finish up a project or completed a cycle)
What symbols do you recognize (geometric shapes, buildings, bridges, gateways, pathways, nature-clouds, lightening, sun)?
The card's suit (gives you the energies you are working with and compatibility with surrounding cards) Here you discover what level the querent is being affected on: wands-career, creativity, sexuality; cups-emotions; swords-attitudes and thoughts; and pentacles-physical body, home life and possessions.
The environment(placid or hostile-rough water, deep pool or stream/river, desert, floral or wooded, urban or rural)
Presence of Animals (protecting/attacking, domestic/wild, guiding, harnessed)
Human Figures (which way do they face, body language-supportive/defensive, attitude-aloof/analytical, angry/worried) How are the figures interacting with each other or are they solitary?
Colors (indicate the individual's level of spiritual evolvement (learning-gray, highly spiritual-purple, spiritual mastery-white) also indicate the suit's energies (fire-orange/red, water-blue, air-yellow, earth-green/brown)
If you are an empathic reader, you may have an emotional reaction to a card, or experience a physical sensation somewhere on your body while you're looking at the card. Pay attention to where it is on you and ask your client if they may be aware of a discomfort there, or draw a card to emphasize/confirm the feeling. If you find out that it is a medical situation which needs attention beyond your scope of abilities and training, do not hesitate to refer the client to competent outside help. You don't have to go into great detail for every card in a layout. Just remember the checklist above and refer to it to sort out whatever it is that you see in the card that stands out and demands your attention.
