HOW TO WRITE TAROT BOOK AND DECK REVIEWS

How would you tell everyone about a tarot book or deck that they just have to add to their collection?  What goes in a tarot book or deck review?  Keeping all of your information on a positive side, you will want to begin with the book’s or deck’s title. Also include the author’s and illustrator’s namesand the publisherand ISBN.

For a book, you will want to say in the first few paragraphs what is most important to the reader such as spreads, new key words, reversals, history, author’s theories, etc. Get the reader’s attention.  For a deck, start with the deck size. Are the backs reversible?  What is the artwork style and medium? Let the reader know if the deck is based on the Rider Waite Smith (RWS) standardor if it is a themed deck.  Is the deck 78 cards or Major Arcana only?

Are the suits standard wands, cups, swords, pentacles, or have they been renamed?   If there is an accompanying bookfor the deck, do a separate book review to go with the deck.  If there is a LWB(little white book), does it contain spreads unique to the deck?

Are the court cards suits renamed?  If so, what are they compared to Rider Waite Smith decks? For the major arcana, are the cards renamed?  Are the orders of cards 8 Strength and 11 Justice switched?  For both books and decks, let the reader know if it is a beginning, intermediate or advanced reading level of book for the reader to comprehend.

Pick several cards that are outstanding to you and describe their beauty and uniqueness, paying attention to symbols, numbers and colors.  Do you, after working with the deck and reading the book, feel that anything has been left out or are there any improvements you might recommend? How does this book relate with other books and that the author may have already published?

There is so much information that can go into a review that you will want to keep the review to two pages or 1500 words or less.  Most of all, remember to frame anything seen as negative in the books or decks into positives.
